On March 3rd (Insh'Allah) we will be setting out to tour the Aloon Aloon area of Indonesia on bikes as many other tourists do. For years, the Indonesian public has been renting out bikes to travelling tourists to use for quick cycling tours. This has proven to be an incredibly lucrative market with little to no barriers of entry and high profitability (seeing as tourists are often willing to pay high prices for relatively inexpensive services). While this satisfies tourists looking to tour within a small area of Indonesia, the locals still prefer using motorbikes to get around, and for good reason. While bicycles are far more environmentally friendly than motorbikes, they aren't nearly as useful for long distance touring. By working with the locals to develop a motorbike rental service for tourists, an entirely new market can be satisfied. While this will greatly benefit tourists, it will also reenergise the local economy and put money into the hands of the people that need it most. With enough organisation and care, we can even aim to decrease the carbon footprint of the project by investing in environmentally friendly motorbikes.
This is a great, practical idea that is easily achievable if planned correctly. This would provide a unique experience to tourists looking to explore the diversity and natural richness of Indonesia.
